"Sam, could you do me a favor?" Thus begins a story that has now become part of America’s true crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga—the story of a young lawyer fresh from the Public Defender’s Office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation’s history. Sam Amirante had just opened his first law practice when he got a phone call from his friend John Wayne Gacy, a well-known and well-liked community figure. Gacy was upset about what he called “police harassment” and asked Amirante for help. With the police following his every move in connection with the disappearance of a local teenager, Gacy eventually gives a drunken, dramatic, early morning confession—to his new lawyer. Gacy is eventually charged with murder and Amirante suddenly becomes the defense attorney for one of American’s most disturbing serial killers. It is his first case. This is a gripping narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

While it's easy to paint John Wayne Gacy as monster he was obviously a broken and damaged man even from the early days of his abusive childhood. No, that does not excuse what he did, but I believe it does shed some light on why he did the things he did. While reading this book I couldn't help but to sympathize with Gacy somewhat due to similar experiences growing up with an alcoholic father who was never pleased with anything. Having desires that back in those days was considered unacceptable such as having sexual attractions to other men. Always being told that a man should act like a real man and do manly things. This book shows just how important our Constitutional right to a fair trial and a proper defense. Thank god for attorney's like Sam Amirante and Bob Motta who have the courage to stand by men like Gacy to ensure our rights are protected despite the fact that Gacy was already on Death Row before the trial even began thanks to all the media coverage. Was Gacy guilty? Absolutely! Did he get a fair trial? About as fair as he was ever going to get. Did he deserve to be put down? In my opinion no. He should have been held in a maximum security facility for the rest of his life so he could be evaluated and studied to try to offer insight into what was going on in his brain. I believe that Gacy was emotionally immature and could neve quite overcome those feelings of inferiority due to trying to live up to his fathers standards even after his father had died.
